The SONY XL-55 belongs to the brand's line of low output MC cartridges. Its 0.2 mV output requires a dedicated MC phono input or a step up transformer. The elliptical stylus tracks from 1.0 to 2.2 g with 1.7 g nominal. The stylus is integrated, so a worn diamond goes out for retipping.

Imaging and dynamics stay well-controlled without turning clinical, while natural vocal tone and forgiving tracking keep the sound relaxed through long sessions. Jazz, vocals and mixed collections on modest to mid-tier arms suit it nicely. The stylus is integrated, so once worn only a retip is possible.
