SONY XL-20

The SONY XL-20 is an entry level moving magnet cartridge fitted with the elliptical ND-200E stylus assembly. Its 3 mV output works comfortably with any standard MM phono input, so no step up device is needed. Recommended tracking force runs from 1.0 to 2.0 g with a nominal setting of 1.5 g. Phono Culture lists 2 compatible replacement styli for this model.

The Sony XL-20 is built around forgiveness. Its light conical, carbon-clad cantilever glides over surface noise and imperfect setups rather than digging for every last detail, so vocals come through natural and full while dynamics feel lively and open. Imaging stays coherent without sharp edges, ideal for relaxed listening, older pressings and modest systems. The stylus is user-replaceable when worn.
